Interview: Miralee Ferrell

Here's that promised interview with Miralee Ferrell, debut author of The Other Daughter:

Welcome, Miralee! Congratulations on the release of your debut novel, The Other Daughter! I know you're excited, and we're all excited for you.

As a reader, I'm fascinated by the primary topic in your book - that of an unknown daughter showing up on the doorstep, and the unavoidable upheaval in the lives of those people her appearance impacts. What prompted you to write about this type of circumstance?

Thanks and yes, I'm very excited that it released recently. A friend suggested that my first book be based on something from my life, as I'd have an easier time fleshing it out. I began to brainstorm a few 'what ifs' from our marriage. What if the 18 yr. old girl who'd written my husband a letter claiming to be his daughter, had been a young teen without a mother, and we had to raise her? What if her conception had happened while he and I were dating, rather than prior to our meeting, as was the case? What if I were NOT a Christian and he was, and I struggled with Christianity? Hmmm....well, that's exactly what it took to ignite the story within and it grew from there and became, The Other Daughter. And to answer anyone panting to know, LOL---yes...the 18 yr old girl WAS his daughter from his 'Before Christ' days and yes, we keep in touch and have a solid relationship with her and her family.

Interesting! Now ... as a writer, I'm interested in your character development. How did you go about choosing the various personalities, quirks and habits of your characters? Are they based on actual people you know?

Excellent question and one I'll enjoy answering. In this book, the two main characters both have some aspects of my husband's and my personality or outlook on life. Susanne is much more of my hubby Allen, than me. He struggled with Christianity for years, even though he got saved prior to our engagement. His main issue was the need to be in control of his life and not bow to an outside authority, even God. He also dealt with some drinking issues, as did Susanne, and some of her arguments at one time or the other, came from his lips.

Josh and Megan, the two children of David and Susanne are very similar in personality and interests as our son Steven and daughter Marnee. Steven loved to dismantle things as a child and Marnee was horse crazy (still is as an adult).

I'm in there somewhere....probably more in the frustration David felt in dealing with Susanne's attitudes toward his faith and drinking.

How long did it take you to write the book, from the first spark of an idea to delivering the manuscript to a publisher?

The rough draft flew out of my head and onto my computer....5 weeks from the first word to the last, of an almost 100,000 word document. It was one year later that I submitted to several houses for consideration, and part of that time was spent hunting an agent and sending it out to a couple of houses on my own, prior to signing with Hartline Agency.

That said, how much time do you devote to writing on a daily basis?

I always cringe when someone asks this question!! I know writers are supposed to write EVERY DAY....but I just can't. My life is crazy most of the time. We spent the last full year building a new home, with the final four months mostly on our shoulders, as we did almost all of the interior finish work and it's a custom home. Since we moved in, we've been trying to get a yard and flower beds in, get a son married off, attended ACFW conference....the list goes on. When I do write, I make it count. I normally write 1,500 to 3,000 words in a sitting, sometimes more. But much of my time is spent on other types of writing...the promotional part, which eats a lot of my time at the computer.

What have you learned throughout the process of writing, pitching - and now, promoting - a novel?

I didn't come down the usual path that many writer's come....I started writing Christian fiction just two years ago, when I started The Other Daughter, and didn't belong to any writer's groups, hadn't read a single writing book, didn't have a crit partner, and only had my sister and one other gal who's an editor of E-books, that helped keep me on the path. They both had experience in editing and pointed out many of the mistakes I made...common ones such as Point of View and telling the reader what was happening rather than showing.

Marketing on the other hand, is a joy and very easy for me, as I worked in sales much of my adult life before starting to write. I spend anywhere from 2-4 hrs per day on the computer with marketing...not every day or every month, but that's been the average per day since about two months ago when I began to push hard on marketing The Other Daughter.

What have I learned? That other Christian writer's are some of the most unselfish, caring, giving people on the face of the earth. Instead of competing and trying to cut one another off at the knees, they practically break their necks to help. I've also learned that if you're not giving God the glory and asking Him to keep your priorities straight, writing will become an albatross around your neck instead of the joyful journey He means it to be. HE is the one who has brought me success in my book by acquiring an agent, then a contract, so quickly, I can claim no credit for that.

I've written a summary of my entire journey from start to contract on my website....HE is an amazing God and I write for Him. If I wrote for myself or for the readers, I'd probably have given up by now.

She's an amazing lady, and her book promises to be just as fantastic! If you want to follow her blog tour, the schedule through the end of this month is below. The Other Daughter: A Synopsis

I promised you a hint as to the contents of Miralee Ferrell's book, The Other Daughter. Here it is! Be sure to come back tomorrow for my interview with this exciting new author.

The girl standing at the door took a deep breath, pulling her suitcase a little closer to her trembling legs. "My mama's dead. He's my daddy."

Susanne Carson knew that she could trust the love of her life—her husband, David—until she discovered a strange, unkempt young girl on their doorstep, claiming to be David’s daughter.

Not that their marriage had ever been perfect—David’s decision to embrace the Christian faith had strained their relationship. Susanne may not have agreed with his beliefs, but at least she trusted him. Had David been hiding this not-so-little secret from his past? He wanted Susanne to believe in God, but believing hadn’t done much to keep David out of another woman’s arms. What else could her husband be hiding?

As David confronts the truth of his past, Susanne must face her own moment of truth as her marriage is taken to the breaking point and the life of one young girl is left in her hands.

Crash!

This has not been a wonderful week ...

My hard drive went down, and I lost all of my categorized contact information ... so I no longer have a list of subscribers to Musical Notes. This loss necessitated my sending a note to everyone in my address book ... at least, the partial address book I was able to retrieve from Yahoo. Because I know this list IS partial, I'm also posting here, hoping to reach those people whose e-mail addresses I no longer have available.

If you were subscribed to my monthly newsletter - or if you weren't, but would like to be - I would so appreciate you letting me know by either sending an e-mail to
delialatham@sbcglobal.net or clicking the subscription icon on the homepage of my website (www.delialatham.com).

Thanks a bunch - you guys are the bestest!

You gotta read this book ...!

I loved The Restitution, by M.L. Tyndall. Following is my review of this wonderful book. If you like pirate stories ... if you prefer Christian (Inspirational) romance ... if you enjoy historical fiction ... then let me tell you, you don't want to miss this book!

· Publisher: Barbour Publishing, Inc (August 1, 2007)
· ISBN-13: 978-1597893619

THE RESTITUTION

Lady Isabel Ashton never thought she’d find herself back aboard the pirate ship where she her innocence was stolen. She certainly never thought she’d need or accept help from the handsome, heartless pirate who took it. But when the son born of their non-consensual relationship is kidnapped, Captain Kent Carlton becomes her only hope of finding the infant, and to Isabel’s surprise, the captain she both feared and hated appears to have turned over a new leaf, at least where she is concerned.

Having read this book without benefit of the previous two in the series, I found it a perfect stand-alone and a wonderfully entertaining read. Isabel is the kind of heroine I absolutely love – she’s not perfect. Born into wealth and status, she treasures those things far more than is healthy or admirable. Her rape and consequential pregnancy caused a major change in her lifestyle, as well as estrangement from her family. She wants her cushy life back, and is prepared to do whatever it takes – within the realms of her new relationship with Christ – to get it. She’s obviously class-conscious, and her attitude is often maddening. On the other hand, she possesses an admirable inner strength; she’s a wonderful mother who adores her son; and her faith, while stretched thin at time, never seriously wavers.

Kent, on the other hand, has discovered what it’s like to love someone who’s unlikely to ever return that affection. Nevertheless, unable to get Lady Isabel Ashton off his mind and out of his heart, he’s determined to try. Discovering she bore his child only cements that iron resolve. Once the lady is back on his ship, he witnesses the change in her brought about by her new faith in God, and begins to question his own lack of something to believe in.

The Restitution is a wonderfully captivating, can’t-stop-turning-the-pages, unforgettable tale. With its swashbuckling pirates, heart-pounding danger, deceptively delicate females, underlying mystery, and a wide range of fascinating personalities, the book leaves nothing to be desired. The author’s time-specific details and amazing character development make the story so real a reader feels almost a part of the action. I’m eager to read the previous two books in the series.

Witty, warm and wonderful!

Sounds good, huh? Well, trust me ... it IS! Bear in mind that this is the third book in a series. Hop on over to MaryLu's website to learn more about the Legacy of the King's Pirates books. (If your sound is on, you might want to turn it down a hair - otherwise the blasting of cannons from all the pirate ships might give you quite a start!) If you've read it, or do soon, be sure to let me know what you think.

Light Vision

Don’t stare at the sun. Look away from the glare.

Familiar phrases that don’t require a lot of explanation because we know – we’ve heard it all our lives – that the human eye cannot withstand bright glare. In severe circumstances it can cause actual blindness.

But spiritual circumstances and natural ones most often have completely opposite results, and staring into the light is no exception. Spiritually, we all need and should want to be blinded by the light of God!

I call it Light Vision.

Saul was a strong personality and a respected man who was truly doing what he thought was right. He wasn’t evil – he simply believed Christians were wrong to the point of being sacrilegious. His desire was to serve God … he just didn’t know how. He was blinded by his years of formal training in Jewish law.

But then ... he had that life-changing Road to Damascus experience! He stared into the glare, becoming blind to this natural world, which opened his eyes to a better one. Big, strong, important Saul, before whom people cringed in fear for their lives, was made completely dependent on others … having to be led into the city by the hand, like a child. Led by people lower than himself on the social ladder. Led.

Saul was blinded so that he could see. But that’s not all. He was blinded so that we – through his ministry as Paul – could see.

That’s what happens when we stare into the glare of God’s glory. We are blinded by His light, and can see only Him. We are made new creatures, and take on new identities as children of God. Children of the King. Royalty. And once our Father the King has us blinded to the trivialities of the world that would steal our attention and our victory, then He can lead us. Only after we’re blinded by the light do we willingly place our hands in His and relinquish our independence, choosing to let Him be in control.

It’s called Light Vision.

Light Vision allows us to overlook things that would make us stumble. We don’t even see them if our eyes are fixed on Jesus – the Light of the World. The same light that blinded Saul on the Damascus road.

A person with true Light Vision won’t see his brother’s faults, nor his sister’s sins. He won’t be put off by hurtful words or deeds, because in comparison to the great light of God’s glory, they’re insignificant and meaningless – certainly not worth a glance away from the Light!

1 John 2:10-11
He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

There’s no need to stumble when you walk in the light – all obstacles are clearly defined and can be avoided.

Light Vision!

With Jesus as the center of our focus, His glory blinds us to all but Him. Light Vision.

Looking for greater things in God? Longing for a way to make Christ your focal point?

Look at Jesus. Turn on your Light Vision.

With your eyes open to greater things, nothing can stand in your way.
